TODAY's Savannah Guthrie reads from behind the news desk barefoot.
Correspondent Jeff Rossen tweeted a behind-the-scenes picture of Savannah standing at the news desk in her stockings, with her high heels placed neatly on the floor next to her. Along with the photo, Jeff sent a wisecrack: “The smell of ‘news’ in Studio 1A.”
Typical of the playful teasing tossed among the TODAY family, Savannah was quick to reply, tweeting, “What are you suggesting?”
TODAY Twitter followers voiced their surprise with retweets, remarking: “Amazing the things you learn on Twitter, thought the news reader on #Today sat, learned from @jeffrossen and @savannahguthrie not the case!” (@LilCdnDiva). And @samrdbarnes leaped to Savannah’s defense, writing, “That's wrong dude! I don't blame her in those shoes.”
Yet discomfort had nothing to do with why Savannah shed her shoes. “I always go barefoot [at the news desk],” Savannah told TODAY.com, “because I was told one of the first times I filled in that I’m too tall for the set.”
Savannah's height has been a topic of attention before (in the video below, she tells Facebook fans just how tall she is), but she revealed that colleague Willie Geist — even taller — has to sit at the news desk to accommodate the set!
TODAY's Savannah Guthrie answers viewers' Facebook questions and talks about who inspires her, what her favorite books are and how tall she is (with and without heels!).
Asked if she typically takes her shoes off for a segment, especially one where her feet are hidden, Savannah replied: “Not usually. Although it has happened before. I take them off if I’m really towering over a guest.”
Jeff is not the first to call attention to Savannah’s flat-footed stance while she reads the news. During one of her first appearances on TODAY, Matt Lauer called attention to it, saying, “You’ve got to buy shoes that fit, Savannah!” as the cameras zoomed in on her feet, cushioned by a blanket placed on the floor.
TODAY's Matt Lauer catches some heat for his fine, light-toned summer footwear, reminiscent of "Pee-wee's Big Adventure," while NBC's Savannah Guthrie goes barefoot behind the news desk.
And several years ago, Weekend TODAY anchor Lester Holt called attention to Savannah’s feet on-air after a news reading. “The next day I wore crazy socks in case he showed them again,” she recalled.
How crazy? “I think they were ‘I Heart NY’ socks. I have lots of crazy socks,” Savannah confessed. “I also have socks with flying pigs.”
It’s good to know Savannah keeps her feet warm in style. And with summer weather around the corner, she has all the more reason to invest in a good pedicure!
Katie Quinn is a video producer for TODAY.com and, standing in solidarity with Savannah, a tall woman. She remembers taking her shoes off at middle school dances so she wouldn’t tower over the boys. Also like Savannah, she proudly owns a variety of crazy socks.
